"True sustainability improvements must be of long term business benefit, including economic gain.
It is our challenge to tap this gain as our business landscape changes.”
Dr Marcin Ziemski (BRC Manager Energy, Water and Emissions Projects)
Sustainable practice is becoming an increasingly important issue across the mining industry, driven by a variety of technical, economic and social factors. The rising cost of fuel and energy, the evolution of new technologies and the unprecedented growth in the profile of sustainability have been the main reasons behind this trend. Energy efficiency and carbon mitigation is becoming an increasingly important factor for industry, and the continuing deregulation of energy and emissions markets worldwide introduces greater opportunities for economic benefits through more sustainable performance.
The BRC is heavily involved with our industry partners to assist in the development, assessment and monitoring of sustainable performance measures. We have in-house expertise in:
· End-to-end modelling of the metals extraction process
· Energy efficiency assessments and analysis in minerals operations
· Application of energy efficiency improvement technologies in minerals operations
· Emissions monitoring and control
Currently the BRC is working with global mining partners to develop sustainability performance reporting tools for mining operations. These will be used to assist in the monitoring and benchmarking of mining industry processes. Through its projects the BRC is taking a holistic approach to optimising mining operations, looking at the combined extraction process to identify improvement opportunities.
